DIY or Hire a Handyman? An Honest Guide
I'll tell you something most handymen won't: a lot of home maintenance you can do yourself, and I'd rather you did. Here's how I'd sort the common jobs, based on years of doing them in Austin homes and condo buildings.
Do it yourself
These are low-risk, need few tools, and are easy to learn. If you want, I'll show you how the first time.
- Cleaning the dishwasher filter
- Replacing smoke and CO alarm batteries
- Cleaning faucet and showerhead aerators
- Changing HVAC filters
- Tightening loose cabinet hinges and handles
- Touching up small paint scuffs
Worth hiring out
You could do these, but most people find the time, tools, and frustration aren't worth it. These are the jobs I do every week.
- Dryer vent cleaning. The hose behind the dryer is easy; the duct inside the wall isn't, especially in a condo.
- Ceiling fans and light fixtures. Heavy, overhead, and you're working with wiring.
- Smart locks, cameras, and home automation. Easy to install, frustrating to get working together. I also do Lutron programming.
- Caulking showers and tubs. Simple in theory; a clean, lasting bead takes practice.
- Doors that stick or won't latch.
- Furniture assembly and picture hanging, especially heavy mirrors and art on drywall.
- Faucet replacement.
- Leak detection systems. Small sensors that shut off water or alert you before a leak becomes a ceiling repair.
Call a licensed pro
Some jobs need a licensed plumber or electrician, and I'll tell you when that's the case rather than take on work I shouldn't. That generally means new circuits or panel work, gas lines, and plumbing work inside walls or on the main lines. If you're not sure which group your job falls in, text me a photo and I'll tell you.
How to decide
Ask yourself three questions:
- If I get it wrong, what's the damage? A crooked picture is a nail hole. A bad faucet connection is a water-damaged cabinet.
- Do I have the tools? Buying a tool for one job often costs as much as hiring it out.
- What's my Saturday worth? A job that takes me an hour can take most people an afternoon.
If the answers point to DIY, go for it. If they don't, I'm happy to help.
